Loudoun County: Raiders Baseball Coach Lucero; Boys Lax Coach O'Hara Will Not Return

(June 22, 2012) - Loudoun County High School will have two new head coaches next spring as the Raiders parted ways earlier this month with long-time baseball coach Tom Lucero and boys lacrosse coach Dennis O'Hara resigns after leading the Raiders to a school-record season.

News: Claudia Dodson VHSL Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award Winners Announced

Charlottesville (June 29, 2012) - A record 34 high schools -- including Heritage, Park View and Tuscarora from Loudoun County -- have been awarded the 2011-12 Claudia Dodson VHSL Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award which recognizes member schools that have established policies and procedures that make sportsmanship a priority and an expectation within the school and school community.

News: Board Sets Final Dulles Rail Worksession for June 29

(June 28, 2012) - The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to hold its final worksession on financing Phase II of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project beginning at 5:00 p.m., Friday, June 29, 2012. The meeting will be held in the Board Room of the Loudoun County Government Center, 1 Harrison Street, S.E. in Leesburg.

2011-12 Sports Year in Review: Talented Class of 2012 Leads Loudoun to New Heights


This is the first of a 4-part series as Viva Loudoun editor Dan Sousa takes a look at the 2011-12 high school sports year in Loudoun

(June 27, 2012) - A talented Class of 2012 helped Loudoun County Public Schools athletes reach new heights in the 2011-12 school year with success on the individual and team levels. In all, a record 199 LCPS senior athletes committed to play athletics at the college level and before graduating many helped their schools raise championship banners on the district, regional and state levels.

On the team levels, the 2011-12 school year was about the rise of the two schools opened in 2005 – Briar Woods and Freedom – and the emergence of Loudoun’s two newest schools opened just two years ago – Tuscarora and Woodgrove.
Briar Woods cemented its place as a power at the Virginia High School League AA classification in the state with a third straight competitive cheer state in the fall and then the Falcons football team repeated its Division 4 state title.

News: Wells Fargo Cup for Athletics Winners Announced

Charlottesville (June 26, 2012) - Cosby, Blacksburg and George Mason claim the top spots in VHSL athletic competition for the 2011-12 school year, winning the coveted Wells Fargo Cup for Group AAA, AA and A. In Group AAA, Cosby won its first Cup title, while Blacksburg won for a Group AA record eighth time, and George Mason claimed its Group A record fourth Cup.

The Wells Fargo Cup goes to the school in each group classification that has achieved the best overall record in VHSL state-level competition in 27 sports – the state champions’ state champion. In AA, Woodgrove and Loudoun County finished 9th and 10th with Briar Woods 15th. Freedom had the highest local AAA finish with a 22nd.

Football: Dominion's Dashaun Wesley to Play at Alderson-Broaddus


Sterling (June 26, 2012) - Dominions High School recent grad Dashaun Wesley has committed to play football  at Alderson -Broaddus, a NCAA Division II school in West Virginia. 


After a Great 3-year year run at Dominion as a running back/linebacker/safety he is says he is looking forward to a new start. Wesley finished his Titan career with 158 carries for 1,020 yards, an avg.of 6.5 yards per carry and he scored eight touchdowns. 


Wesley becomes the 199th athlete from the Class of 2012, most ever, to commit to play in college.

News: University Station Area Residents Encouraged to Attend Upcoming Quarterly Meeting June 28

(June 25, 2012) -Loudoun County Sheriff's Office will hold a public safety meeting for the University Station area of Loudoun County Thursday, June 28, 2012.  

The quarterly public safety meeting is part of the agency's effort to better utilize resources, while at the same time providing a higher level of service to county residents. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Stone Bridge High School located at 43100 Hay Road in Ashburn, Virginia.

Boys Soccer: Freedom's McQuitty Joins George Washington Recruiting Class with Local and International Flavor

(June 25, 2012) - Freedom High School recent graduate Philip McQuitty joins a George Washington University men's soccer recruiting class for first-year head coach Craig Jones that is a mix of Northern Virginia players as well as international talent including athletes from England, Iceland and South Africa.

"I am very excited about our incoming class," Coach Jones said. "Creating a competitive environment is key to being successful, and I believe our incoming class will be pushing for starting spots and contributing on the field immediately."

Football: Briar Woods Rising SR Cam Serigne Commits to Wake Forest

(June 24, 2012) - Briar Woods High School rising senior tight end Cam Serigne, who helped the Falcons to back-to-back VHSL Division 4 state titles, verbally committed a week ago to play at NCAA Division I Wake Forest.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder had offers from UMass, Ohio, Temple, James Madison and Air Force. He is the second Falcon to commit early with Matt Rolin choosing South Carolina in May. Read more on Seigne's verbal from the Washington Post.

Interest is picking up in other Briar Woods players as well as rising junior quarterback Trace McSorley picked up his first offer, from Boston College, and rising senior running back Cory Colder was offered by Bucknell.

News: Loudoun County Chairman York Announces $80 Million Transportation Loan to Kincora Project

(June 24, 2012) - Loudoun County Chairman Scott K. York and Supervisor Shawn M. Williams announce this week what they called a "huge win for Loudoun" and in particular for the thousands of commuters that travel Waxpool Road and Route 28 on a daily bases as the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved an $80 million loan from the Virginia Transportation Infrastructure Bank to the Kincora development to build Gloucester Parkway and Pacific Boulevard in Loudoun County. This loan will pave the way to construct the most critical missing road link in eastern Loudoun.

Girls Soccer: Stone Bridge Rising SR Carson Cyphers to Play at VCU

Copyright © Steven Holland 2012Ashburn (June 23, 2012) - Stone Bridge High School rising senior Carson Cyphers has verbally committed to playing NCAA Division I soccer at VCU starting in 2013.

Cyphers plays midfield for the Bulldogs where she helped lead the team to Northern Region titles in 2010 and 2012. In 2010 the Bulldogs won the VHSL Group AAA state title and finished the season undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the final ESPN Fab 50 national rankings.

She plays club soccer for the U17 McLean ECNL Power who finished atop the ECNL National Flight B this season and are currently ranked No. 25 in the country by TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Cyphers also participated in the Virginia ODP program from 2007-2011. With the ODP program she traveled internationally to play in the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia in 2009 and to Spain and Portugal in 2010.

 

NFL: Washington Redskins Training Camp Presented by RE/MAX Opens to Public on July 26

Ashburn (June 23, 2012) - The Washington Redskins Training Camp Presented by RE/MAX will be open to the public beginning on Thursday, July 26, at Redskins Park, the team announced today. A total of 13 practices will be open to fans, highlighted by Fan Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 4, at noon. This will be one of the last summer's to catch the Redskins in Ashburn with the team's recent announcement of moving training camp to Richmond in the future.

Track and Field: Tuscarora's Amirah Al-Bayyinah Commits to Coastal Carolina

Leesburg (June 22, 2012) - Tuscarora High School recent graduate Amirah Al-Bayyinah, a girls basketball and track and field standout for the Huskies, has committed to the NCAA Division I Coastal Carolina track and field program, according to Tuscarora girls basketball coach Michael Newkirk.

Al-Bayyinah was third in the triple jump at the VHSL AA state meet with a 36-10.50 leap. She was runner-up at the Region II meet with a 37-06.50 effort. Al-Bayyinah won both the long and triple jumps at the Dulles District meet as she helped the Huskies to the district team title.

(June 22, 2012) - Today is the last day to register for next week's Paul Hewitt Basketball Camp, which is the final week for those players entering grades 7 to 12.

Women's Soccer: U.S. Olympic Team Member Becky Sauerbrunn to Debut with D.C. United Women Saturday


Germantown, Md. (June 22, 2012) - The wait to see Becky Sauerbrunn's world-class talents on display on the Maryland SoccerPlex pitch is finally over - the 2012 Olympian is set to make her home D.C. United Women debut on Saturday night against the Virginia Beach Piranhas and needless to say is quite excited to take the field with the W-League's hottest club.

Softball: Loudoun Storm 14U Black Takes First at USSSA Blast at the Beach


(June 22, 2012) - The Loudoun Storm 14U Black softball team clinched the 1st place title at the USSSA Blast at the Beach in Salisbury, MD on June 17, 2012. There were 50 14U teams in the tournament.

Germantown, Md. (June 21, 2012) - D.C. United Women scored five goals in the first 27 minutes of the first half on Wednesday night -- including a score from Broad Run High School grad Holly King and an assist from Stone Bridge rising senior Ashley Herndon -- and would not look back, going on to beat the Fredericksburg Impact 5-0 in dominating fashion to remain in sole possession of first place in the W-League's Eastern Conference.

News: APEX Gymnastics Raises $28.5K for Western Loudoun Relay for Life

(June 21, 2012) - The APEX Gymnastics teams and families came together on sunny June 2nd to participate in the Western Loudoun Relay for Life at Heritage High School in Leesburg. APEX raised $28,500 for the event by doing various fundraisers such as giving away an iPad, holding open gyms and soliciting donations from family and friends. APEX was recognized for having the largest team contingent of over 150 team members and the largest single fundraiser in APEX owner, the late Marty Newsom.

Women's Soccer: D.C. United Women Offering Free Youth Tickets to Tonight's Game

(June 20, 20120 - D.C. United Women's soccer team, currently on a 10-game winning streak, is offering free youth tickets to tonight's 7:30 p.m. game at the Maryland SoccerPlex. U.S. Women's soccer Olympian Becky Sauerbrunn will be on hand tonight to sign autographs from 6 to 7 p.m. as well.

Football: After 26 Major College Scholarship Offers, Briar Woods LB Matt Rolin Chooses South Carolina


Ashburn (June 20, 2012) - Briar Woods High School rising senior linebacker/tight end Matt Rolin racked up more two dozen major college scholarship offers before verbally committing in May to play at the University of South Carolina starting in 2013.

Rolin's big announcement came via Twitter where he tweeted: "Can't spell South caROLINa without Rolin! Committed to The University of South caROLINa!!!!" Rolin's family has huge ties to the Columbia, S.C. school as his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles all graduated from the university.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Rolin helped the Falcons to back-to-back VHSL Division 4 state titles in 2010 and 2011. As a junior he had 94 tackles with nine sacks and two interceptions while being named first team all-state.


Before choosing the Gamecocks, the 4-star linebacker also had offers from: Baylor, Boston College, Colorado, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Penn State, Purdue, Tennessee, UConn, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Washington.

Flag Football: Leesburg Parks and Recreation Ida Lee Ravens Runaway with Tournament Title

(June 19, 2012) - The Leesburg Ravens, representing the Ida Lee NFL Flag Football League, ran away with the 11U bracket of the 2nd Annual Elite Flag Football Tournament. The Ravens, coached by Bob Barts and Scott Kalivokas, dominated the opposition as they rolled to victories over the Manassas Sharks of the Manassas Youth Football League, The Centreville Spartans of the Southwestern Youth Association and the Bealeton Raiders of the Fauquier Youth Flag Football League.

Rugby: Play to Win Sports Camp Set for June 26-29

(June 19, 2012) - Play To Win Sports has partnered with the Cardinal Rugby Organization and Play Rugby, USA to host a series of Rugby Skill Development Camps at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, Virginia from June 26-29. Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun Athletes of the Month: May 2012
(June 15, 2012) - Earlier this month Cheers Sports and Viva Loudoun held a photo shoot for the 2012 Spring Sports Athletes of the Month. More than 100 of Loudoun's prep baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, tennis, and track and field athletes turned out to Cheers Sports in Ashburn for the shoot.

"With 12 high schools and such incredible success this spring from so many team it was our most difficult selection process since we starting doing the Athletes of the Month program in 2006," said Viva Loudoun editor Dan Sousa, who chose the athletes honored.

The athletes were split into three groups for individual and group photos. based upon both performances and athletes availability for the photo shoot. The March 2012 group was released Wednesday. The April 2012 group was released Thursday, and today we release the May 2012.
