On the Sidelines with Dan Sousa: Freedom is the Place to Be this Spring

On the Sidelines with Dan Sousa

(May 30, 2012) - Freedom High School opened in 2005 and I'm not sure I covered a game being played in the spring in South Riding for the first four years. It wasn't anything personal but with so many high schools in Loudoun you go where the big match-ups are and Freedom struggled in the formative years to build winning spring athletic teams.

Fast forward to Memorial Day 2012 and my quest to see as many regional playoffs games in one spot as possible and that has meant for years Broad Run but this year, I started out at Broad Run as the Spartans took on Colonial Forge in the Northwest Region regional quarterfinals at 4 p.m.

Awaiting me with a trio of big games was Freedom High School with proud athletic director Matt Oblas overseeing Northwest Region baseball, boys soccer and girls soccer quarterfinals. Freedom is the hot spot now for spring AAA athletics.

Spring Playoff Schedule: May 30

(May 30, 2012) - Six AAA schools play state tournament spots tonight with Freedom High School baseball and boys soccer hosting Northwest Region semifinals and Broad Run softball hosting a Northwest semifinal as well. All three contests start at 6 p.m.

Stone Bridge and Broad Run girls soccer, along with Stone Bridge softball, are on the road in their quest to clinch regional title and state tournament spots.

In AA, 11 teams are in Region II quarterfinal action, all left over from Tuesday's stormy weather. Potomac Falls baseball, Briar Woods boys soccer as well as Woodgrove girls soccer and softball all host contests.

Zack Hopeck, not only picked up the win for Heritage on the mound, but drove in the tying run and Dan Robinson had a 3-RBI night including the game-winning 2-RBI double.

Purcellville (May 29, 2012) - The Woodgrove High School softball team complemented its regular-season Dulles District title with the Dulles District tournament championship, defeating the defending Group AA state champion Briar Woods 1-0 May 25 at home.

The game marked the eighth time the two teams have squared off since Woodgrove opened in the fall of 2010, including last years’ regional and state title games. The Wolverines’ most recent victory now evens up the series, with each team taking four games. Woodgrove has won two of the three games this season, with Briar Woods edging the Wolverines 1-0 in March.

If the two teams are to face again this season, they must advance past tonight's Region II quarterfinals with Woodgrove hosting Dulles foe Loudoun County and Briar Woods on the road at Skyline.

Tonight's Playoff Schedule: For Some it Will Seem Like Old Times!

(May 29, 2012) - A total of 17 Dulles District teams are in high school regional playoff action tonight and for some the match-up's will seem quite familiar as there is a baseball, softball, boys soccer, girls soccer and boys lacrosse game featuring two Dulles teams facing each other.

In the AA Northern Section boys lacrosse final, Dominion hosts Woodgrove in a rematch of the Dulles District tournament semifinal won by the host Titans, 9-8. In the regular season Dominion (13-6) edged the Wolverines (14-4) in another one-goal game, 11-10.

In the Region II baseball quarterfinals, Dulles District regular-season champion Potomac Falls (20-3) faces upset-minded Heritage (12-12) for the fourth time on the season with the Panthers winning 5-3 and 3-1 in the regular season and 8-1 in the district semifinals.

In the Region II softball quarterfinals, for the second year in a row, Loudoun County (17-7) finds itself at Woodgrove (21-2). The Wolverine, the Dulles regular-season and tournament champions, beat County 11-1 and 1-0 this season.

In the Region II boys soccer quarterfinals, Park View (10-8-1) finds itself playing Dulles District regular-season champion Briar Woods (16-2-2) for the fourth time this year with the Falcons winning 3-0 and 1-0 in the regular season and 4-1 in the district semifinals.

In the Region II girls soccer quarterfinals, the season for either Briar Woods or Woodgrove will end the way it started playing each other. The two teams tied 0-0 in the season opener but it has been all Woodgrove since as the Dulles regular-season and tournament champion Wolverines (18-0-1) have won 18 straight, including a 1-0 win over the Falcons (10-5-5) in the regular-season and a 3-2 win in the district semifinals.

Track and Field: Race to History! Loudoun County Boys Take First Regional Title

(May 28, 2012) - The only thing slowing down the Loudoun County High School boys track and field team from running to history last Wednesday were frequent weather delays at the Region II meet at Tuscarora High school. When the all clear was given, it was all Raiders breaking the tape as Loudoun County took six of the eight events on the track and finished runner-up in the other two as they won their first ever regional title going away.

Loudoun County, with juniors Steven Graham winning the 100 (11.00), 200 (22.29) and 400 (48.28) and Patrick Joseph winning the 800 (1:54.98) and 1600 (4:15.82), scored 84 points to finish nearly 30 points clear of runner-up Fauquier (56). Heritage (31) and host Tuscarora (27) were 5th and 6th.

The 48.28 for Graham in the 400 was the lone Region II mark to fall at the meet and is the fastest 400 AA finish in the state this year. Joseph's 1600 meter time puts him tops in the state as well and his 800 is second in the state.

Adding to the Raiders point lode were senior Teddy Murphy who won the 300 meter hurdles with a school-record and top AA time in the state at 38.44, beating runner-up Heritage's Marcus Finney (39.28). Finney turned the tables in the 110 hurdles winning with a 14.46 to Murphy's runner-up 14.58. That puts Finney and Murphy 1-2 in the state currently for the 100 hurdles.

In the only non-hurdle track event no won by the Raiders, the 3200 meters, County finished 2-3 with seniors Josh Showalter and Bruce McIntosh combining for 14 team points.

On the girls side, Woodgrove finished fourth with 38 points behind winner Handley (66), Louisa County (57.33) and Fauquier (47). Dulles District champion Tuscarora was 7th with 34.

The Wolverine girls quartet of senior Audrey Houghton, senior Lydia Cromwell, junior Alex Juzbasich and senior Florence Thompson won the 4x800 relay with a finals time of 9:32.73 that clipped more than 10 seconds off their season best time. Houghton and Thompson then teamed with sophomore Gaynor Houghton and senior Anna Harpster to take the 4x400 relay, this time shaving more than four seconds off their best time with a 4:04.94.

Houghton was one of two Loudoun's individual girls winners with a winning 2:15.04 in the 800 meters. Tuscarora's Natalie Rosas won the 3200 meters with a 11:28.08.

Despite not taking titles, some of the girls times were noteworthy with Briar Woods Jackie Defer and Dominion's Bridget Rice, running 5:11.80 and 5:12.90. respectively in a fast 1600 meters final. Potomac Falls Eileen Fauteux continued her excellent postseason with a 45.28 third-place finish in the 300 hurdles.

Softball: These Kids are All Right! Stone Bridge Swings Into Northern Region Quarterfinals

(May 26, 2012) - Since 2000, the year Stone Bridge High School opened, the Bulldogs have watched four different Loudoun softball teams celebrate eight different state titles including Ashburn neighbors Briar Woods (2011) and Broad Run (2009, 2008, 2007, 2000). Despite a line-up that includes just one senior, the Bulldogs are confident that 2012 may finally be their time to shine at States.

"We are going all the way. This is our year," said junior Sydney Broderick after the Bulldogs opened the AAA Northern Region tournament with a 4-0 win over Westfield. Stone Bridge (21-2) faces Lake Braddock on Monday at 6 p.m. in a quarterfinal at Falls Church High School.

Getting through the early rounds of the Northern Region can be tricky, especially when the Liberty District is matched up with Concorde District teams like Friday evening, so there was a collective exhale among the Bulldog fans when Stone Bridge finally padded its 1-0 first inning lead with three runs in the sixth. Junior pitcher Kelly McDaniel retired the visiting Bulldogs 1-2-3 in the seventh to complete her 5-hit shutout.

"Tonight was the bear looming in the backgroud so winning was a huge sigh of relief," said Stone Bridge 2nd-year coach Billy Rice. "Now they can go and have some fun next week and see what happens."
