Friday, April 29 Scoreboard + The Skinny
Dulles District Rundown: Let's start with some of the shake-up in the Dulles District, especially with the Briar Woods girls beating Broad Run in soccer -- Spartans first district loss since May 2007! -- and the Falcons knocking the Spartans out of a virtual 3-way tie for first place in softball
Baseball: Broad Run had to come back against Briar Woods to improve to 9-0 in district and keep its 2-game lead in the loss column over Potomac Falls (7-2). Briar Woods (6-4), Dominion (5-4), Freedom (6-5) and Woodgrove (5-5) are in a scramble to earn a top four finish and home quarterfinal date for the playoffs
Softball: Woodgrove (9-1) and Potomac Falls (8-1) remain tied in the loss column with Broad Run (7-2) falling to Briar Woods (7-3). Loudoun County (5-4) remains a dangerous No. 5 seed down the road.
Boys Soccer: The top three teams kept their distance at the top as Park View (10-1-0, 30 points), Broad Run (9-0-0, 27) and Tuscarora (7-2-1, 22) all won. Freedom (4-6-2, 14) with a tie against Dominion (4-4-1, 13) moved into a tie with Loudoun County (4-5-2, 14) for the No. 4 seed.
Girls Soccer: For the first time in years, a team other than Broad Run (8-1-0, 24) is at the top as Freedom (9-3-0, 27) takes over even though the Eagles still have more losses as the Spartans have games to make up. Briar Woods (6-3-1, 19) is closed on idle Loudoun County (7-2-0, 21) for the No. 3 spot.
Please check back as we update each game with The Skinny as sent in by the teams. Plus we have full coverage including video highlights of the Woodgrove-Loudoun Valley lacrosse doubleheader.

Ashburn (Apr. 29, 2011) - Stone Bridge High School Athletic Director Dave Hembach released the following statement on his hiring of South County assistant coach Ben West to lead the Bulldogs boys basketball program:
"I'm pleased to announce Ben West, of South County High School, has been named the new Boys Basketball Head Coach for Stone Bridge. Ben has coached at WT Woodson High School and at South County High since it opened. Since 2009 Coach West has been the Varsity Boys Basketball Assistant Coach. Coach West will be a Special Educational teacher at Stone Bridge High School starting next fall."
All interested parents and players are invited to "Meet the Coach" night this Tuesday, May 3 at 6 p.m. in the SBHS library. Coach West will discuss his expectations and off-season plans in preparation for the upcoming 2011-12 season.
Coach West released the following statement about joining the Stone Bridge Staff: “I am humbled and very excited to have been given the opportunity to lead the Stone Bridge boys basketball program. The school and community are passionate about their sports and academics, so the decision to apply for the job was an easy one. I am proud to be representing an Athletics Program with such an amazing reputation for integrity and success, and I look forward to working with both Principal (Jim) Person and Activities Director (Dave) Hembach in making the Varsity Boys Basketball team a viable region contender in the near future.”

Football: Magnificent 7! Stone Bridge Celebrates Group Moving to College Ranks

| There are almost 100 photos from the celebration ... check them out! |
The seven players honored before teammates, coaches, family and friends included: Alex Mohkiber (Catholic), Kyle Gouveia (James Madison), Brian Rody (Virginia Tech), Dexter Rogers (Hampton), James Johnson (Christopher Newport), Ben Branower (McDaniel) and Marcus Harris (College of the Canyons Junior College).
Bulldog head coach Mickey Thompson had nice things to say about the players that as a group made back-to-back state title appearances. In particular he said that James Madison was getting a bargain in Gouveia, one of the top players in the state at linebacker but overlooked by larger schools because of his size. Thompson also liked the chances of Harris, one of the top running backs in the state, to be able to transition from his California junior college to a top tier 4-year program.
Rody was the Bulldogs starting quarterback and will be a preferred walk-on at Tech. Mohkiber and Johnson were key cogs on the Bulldog offensive line with Johnson expected to play D-line in college. Branower at linebacker and Rogers at DB were two reasons that the Bulldogs defense allowed only an average of six points per game while riding a 14-game winning into a title rematch with Phoebus.
Thursday's signings give Stone Bridge 11 from the Class of 2011 to play in college with early signees: Rob Burns (Virginia), John Cheritis (Washington and Lee), Calvin Hollenhorst (Coastal Carolina) and Spenser Rositano (Boston College).

Lacrosse: Potomac Falls Senior Frammartino to Play at Bethany College
Sterling (April 29, 2011) – Vince Frammartino, a senior at Potomac Falls High School, has committed to attend NCAAA Division III Bethany College next fall, where he plans to continue his lacrosse career.
After Visits to numerous campuses Frammartino stated: "This is the place I want to play. It is a place where I think I can make an immediate impact."
Frammartino is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound, defensive middie who has also played for club teams, Fuze Lacrosse and the 2010 undefeated Loudoun Cavaliers.
“While playing for me, he went about the task at hand with a determination and resilience that is not always prevalent as I’d like it to be in athletes today." said Fuze/Heritage High School boys coach Jason "Choppy" Burke. "I admire Vince’s work ethic, his competitive drive, and a desire to be as successful as he can be”.
Located in Bethany, W.V., the college founded in 1840 has an enrollment of 910 and the Bison play in the President's Athletic and ECAC conferences. Zach Gordon, a sophomore from Leesburg who played at Heritage, is on the Bethany current roster.

Baseball
Broad Run 7, Woodgrove 0
The Skinny: The Broad Run Spartans Baseball team continued its winning ways with a 7-0 victory over visiting Woodgrove High School on Tuesday night. With the win, the Spartans run their record on the season to 10-1 (8-0 in the Dulles District).
Senior Taylor Clarke threw a complete game on the mound for Broad Run to improve his pitching record to 5-0 on the season. Clarke struck out 11 hitters, gave up two singles, and walked 3. The shutout performance was his second in his last two outings.
Offensively, the Spartans got things going early with 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. The team was led by Clarke (2 singles, 2 RBI, 2 BB), senior Nick Richardson (2 singles, 2 RBI), and sophomore AJ Powell (2 singles, RBI). Junior Chris Johnson had a double and scored a run. Sophomore Joe Delahaba had an RBI double as well.
The Spartans are back in action when they take on Tuscarora High School tomorrow in Leesburg. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Multimedia Extra! Dan Sousa caught up with the three Spartan aces and interviewed them after Tuesday's victory:
Taylor Clarke
Connor Jessop
A.J. Powell
Dominion 8, Briar Woods 1
The Skinny: The Titans report that they avenged an earlier 8-0 loss to the falcons with senior pitcher Ryan Doyle striking out eight to earn the victory. Doyle helped himself at the plate by going 3-for-3 with a single, double and home run over the left field fence.
Falcons report that they fell to 7-6 on the season and 6-3 in the Dulles District. Cam Serigne took the loss on the mound for the Falcons after allowing 7 runs on 8 hits in 4.2 inninngs of work. Sean Harding led the Falcons at the plate as he went 1-3 with a triple and run scored. The Falcons look to get back on track tomorrow night as they return home to take on the Woodgrove Wolverines.
Tuscarora 3, James Wood 1
The Skinny: Tuscarora’s bats were as warm as the summer-like weather Tuesday night as the Huskies banged out 10 hits to best the James Wood Colonels 3-1. The Huskies offense threatened early in the second inning as right fielder Eddie Lang, first baseman Ian Anderson, and third baseman Tyler Dietrich hit three straight one-out singles to load the bases.
The Colonels’ pitcher wriggled free however, by inducing a comebacker to start a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. Tuscarora broke through the next inning when, with one out, center fielder Dalton Scanlon and left fielder Brady Kaplan hit back to back singles. Two batters later, with two outs, catcher Hunter Oke drove a single to right field to score Scanlon and put the Huskies up 1-0.
James Wood evened the score in the bottom of the frame, manufacturing a run out of an error, two stolen bases, and a sacrifice fly to right. That would be the only run Tuscarora starting pitcher Travis Burke would allow in his four innings of work. The Huskies’ offense then gave him the win in the top of the fifth when Kaplan and shortstop Bernie Mayflower were both hit by pitches to lead off the inning and Oke laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Lang drove in Kaplan from third with a single to right field, and Anderson brought in Mayflower with a sac fly to right to put the Huskies up 3-1.
Pitchers Pete Sotos and Mayflower then closed out the game with three scoreless innings in relief, helped by a textbook 6-4-3 double play in the bottom of the sixth. The Huskies aim to keep the momentum going when they host the Broad Run Spartans Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
Stone Bridge 13, South Lakes 2
The Skinny: Steve Johnston reports for the Bulldogs taht the team rode the strong right arm of senior Steven Putnick, flawless defense, aggressive base running, and powerful hitting to a 13-2 victory over Liberty District foe South Lakes.
Putnick faced only 25 hitters in recording the complete game victory, his third win of the season. Only two outs were recorded by his outfielders as Putnick was dominant from start to finish including strikeouts of the last two hitters to end the game. The Bulldog defense was solid all night but the efforts of two defenders in particular stood out. First baseman Connor Donovan made a couple of outstanding plays including an all-out diving catch of a foul popup in front of the South Lakes dugout. Ty Lighton recorded seven assists and one putout as Putnick had the Seahawk hitters beating the ball into the ground all night.
The Bulldogs also ran the bases aggressively stealing a season high twelve bags including three each by Lighton and leftfielder Josh Kuzbel. Junior Scott Doescher added two and four other Bulldogs had one apiece.
The Stone Bridge attack was led by Lighton (3-4, 2b, 3 RBI), Sid Harvey (2-5, 2B, 4 RBI), Alex Wynn (2-3, 1 RBI), and Ryan Johnston (2-4, BB, SB). Spencer Rositano (1-4, 2B), Donovan (1-2, BB), Tyler Mocabee (1-1, SB), and Kuzbel (1-3, 2B, HBP) contributed RBI hits as well.
The win runs the Stone Bridge season record to 10-3 and they currently sit alone atop the Liberty District standings, one game ahead of arch rival Madison. The two teams will meet on Friday night and the atmosphere at Madison promises to be electric as the Warhawks will attempt to avenge the 10-9 loss that Stone Bridge put on them earlier in the season.
Loudoun County 8, Park View 4
The Skinny: Raiders report that they shook off the spring break rust and worked out an important Dulles District victory tonight, shaking off the Park View Patriots 8-4. Their record improves to 7-5 overall and 4-5 in the district.
Senior Ryan Wigfield pitched 5 and 2/3 innings to get the victory. He kept the Patriots hitless through 4 innings, striking out 5 and limiting them to 4 hits. The Patriots came in the sixth inning. Cabot Phillips came in to relieve Wigfield in the sixth and struck out three.
Raiders had to scrap for hits and runs tonight, as Park View countered with young slow pitching that kept the Raider sluggers off balance to start. In the first inning, Stephen Veschi led off with a walk and advanced to third with a follow up single by Nick Fischer. Tyler Saleck then sacrificed Veschi in for the first run. They pieced together a second run in the third as Fischer reached on an error and scored on a double by Matt Slack.
Raider's Field became a slugger's ball park tonight as Ethan Carlyon led off the 4th inning with a solo home run. The Raiders then picked up two more runs as Taylor Cokeley had a single and a stolen base, then scored on a single by Veschi. Fischer then followed up with and RBI double.
Slack then crushed a solo home run to start the 5th inning. In the 6th inning, Kris Pratt blasted a 2-run home run to give some insurance runs.
Raiders hope to even their district record on Wednesday with an away game at Freedom
Heritage 13, Stonewall Jackson 5
The Skinny: Mitchell Bowers throws a complete game in a Cedar Run District game against Stonewall Jackson. Bowers struck out 5, while scattering 9 hits. The entire Heritage offense contributed, including multi-hit games by sophomore Lorenzo Calderon, and seniors Bowers, Shane Carrera, and Evan McDaniel. Junior Cameron Bell put the game out of reach with a pinch hit home run in the bottom of the 6th.
The Pride (2-0, 4-10) continue Cedar Run District play Friday at Battlefield (1-1, 9-4). First pitch is at 6pm.
WP: Mitchell Bowers (2-1)
CG, 5 R, 4 Earned runs, 5 K, 9 H, 3 BB
Offensively for the Pride:
Lorenzo Calderon 2-3 3R, 3 SB, RBI
Mitchell Bowers 2-5 2R, SB, 1 RBI
Shane Carrera 2-4, 2R, 3 RBI,
Tyler McCullock 1-3, RBI
Daniel Gershen 1-3, 2B, R, SB, 2 RBI
Danny Klemm 1-3, 2 RBI
Josh Reed 1-1, R
Evan McDaniel 2-3, 2B, R
Cameron Bell 1-1, HR, 2 RBI
Potomac Falls 2, Freedom 0
The Skinny: Potomac Falls got a little redemption against a Freedom team that handed them their first District loss in 3 years earlier this season. The Panthers prevailed 2-0 in a pitchers duel that pitted Jackson Rogers against Zach Newell.
The Panthers got single runs in the 3rd and 4th innings and Rogers buckled down when he needed to, stranding six Eagle base runners. Freedom left one on base in every inning but the 6th but could not find a way to score on Rogers.
The Panthers took the lead in the 3rd on a walk to Matt Hoover. Tyler Caldwell’s sacrifice bunt moved Hoover to second and he moved to third on a groundout. Hoover then scored on a passed ball before Ben Sweger singled to center. Potomac Falls added an insurance run in the 4th on a double by Ryan Miller who scored on Colin Deely’s single to right field.
Rogers recorded six strikeouts on the night to pick up his sixth win of the season and remain unbeaten. Potomac Falls never seemed to figure out how to hit Newell who only gave up five hits and one earned run.
The Panthers remain at home for Friday’s game against Tuscorora. Game time is 6.
Softball
Broad Run 4, Woodgrove 3
The Skinny: Spartans ruin Wolverines unbeaten season and avenge an earlier 10-0 loss to Woodgrove with Dani Cook's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jennie Himler singled to start the winning rally and moved to second on a ground out before giving way to pinchrunner Francesca Beller who scored the winning run. Woodgrove, trailing, 3-1, tied it 3-3 in the fifth inning but lost a chance to go ahead when a runner was tagged out at third base. Ashley Ferrara picked up the win for BR. McKall Miller had a multi-hit night at the plate for the Spartans.
More on BR win, courtesy of Bob Pugh:
The Broad Run Spartan softball team avenged a March 28th 10-0 drudging at the hands of Woodgrove by handing the Wolverines (12-1, 8-1) their first loss of the season, 4-3. After surrendering a run in the top of the first inning, the Spartans (10-2, 7-1) responded quickly in the bottom of the first, with junior Kate Sims doubling home two runs and then scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior Maggie Betz to jump out to a 3-1 lead. The score remained unchanged until Woodgrove tied the score in the top of the fifth inning. The Wolverines appeared ready to break the game open in their favor, having plated a run and the bases still loaded with no outs. A force at home for the first out was followed by a sacrifice fly to left field scoring the tying run, but the Spartans were able to turn this into a double play as they caught a runner off of third base. Both defenses held strong as the game remained tied entering the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out junior Jennie Himler singled to right field and advance to second on a grounder back to the pitcher. Sophomore Dani Cook then drove a 2-2 pitch to right center field that scored pinch runner Francesca Beller with the winning run.
Junior Ashley Ferrara picked up the complete game victory, striking out 3 and waking 2. Sophomore McKall Miller was two for two with two doubles, a walk, and a run scored. Betz added two singles to her first inning sacrifice fly.

Stone Bridge 16, South Lakes 1 (5 inn.)
The Skinny: In a total team effort, Stone Bridge defeated the South Lakes Seahawks 16-1, in 5 innings. Allie Brill pitched the complete game for the win. Next up for Stone Bridge is Madison (away) on Friday, April 29.
Loudoun County 5, Park View 4
The Skinny: Raiders report that Loudoun County (8-4, 5-4 Dulles District) was able to get by the visiting Park View Patriots 5-4 in Leesburg. The Raiders rallied with 4 runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 5-3 then hold on for the win. Kelley Duerbeck (2-3, 2b,bb,run) Cortini Reitz (2-3,run,rbi, bb), and Erin Ertel (2-4) all had 2 hits for the Raiders. Allison Coates (1-3, 2rbi), Brittney Platt (1-3, run), Kiley Jacobus (1-4, run) and Renay Aubel (1-4, run) also had hits for the Raiders.
Jacobus went all 7 innings giving up just 1 earned run while striking out 4, walking 3, and allowing 3 hits in earning the win.
The Raiders travel to South Riding for a game against the Freedom Eagles Wed. night with the first pitch scheduled for 6 P. M.
Patriots report that Loudoun County scored four unearned runs in the fourth to defeat Park View 5-4 in the first game since returning from spring break. The Raiders had nine hits against the Patriots, including two each by Erin Ertel and Kelley Duerbeck. The Patriots kept the game close while only getting three hits off of Riley Jacobus, who also walked three. The four runs, including the one that ended up being the game-winner were all scored after the Patriots got the first two hitters out. A single, a three base outfield error, an error by the shortstop and two straight singles plated all four runs. The big hit of the inning was a two run single by Alison Coates that found its way between 1st and 2nd. Brittney Moore took the loss for the Patriots even though she only gave up one earned run in the second on a bases loaded infield single.
This loss drops Park View’s record to 3-9/2-8 District. They host Dominion tomorrow night.
Potomac Falls 7, Freedom 0
The Skinny: Returning from Spring Break, the Potomac Falls Panthers (9-2, 7-1 Dulles District) resumed their winning ways by defeating Freedom 7-0 for their fifth straight win and found themselves in a three-way tie for first place in the Dulles District. Panthers senior pitcher Heather Kiefer recorded her 20th career shutout limiting the Eagles to four hits while striking out nine and walking none. The Panthers were led offensively by junior Carlyn Hanzel (1-2) with a double and 3 RBIs, junior Peyton Valentine (1-3) with two runs batted in, sophomore Anna Zembar (2-3) who was 4-for-4 on base, and Kiefer (1-2) with a run batted in.
Potomac Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Erin Frasca (3-4 on base) got on by an error, advanced to third on junior Lauren Fulcher's (1-4) single to right field, and later scored on Kiefer's single to left center. Zembar got on by an infield error to load the bases and was replaced by courtesy runner freshman Kaitlyn Whitaker (3 runs scored and a stolen base) before Hanzel was hit by a pitch scoring the second run. After a fielder's choice force out at the plate, Whitaker later scored on a wild pitch. The Panthers didn't score again until the fifth inning when Kiefer got on by a hit pitch, Zembar singled to right, and junior Caitie McClay was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs Valentine singled up the middle to score two runs. In the sixth inning, the Panthers scored two more runs on Hanzel's two-out double past third base down the left field line scoring Frasca and Whitaker (running for Zembar) after they both singled and stole a base. Kiefer struck out the side to end the game.
Briar Woods 7, Dominion 1
The Skinny: Senior Kasey Ball went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while junior Macy Jones had two hits, two runs and two RBIs and also scattered three hits in the circle to lead Briar Woods to a 7-1 win over Dominion Tuesday in Sterling.
Briar Woods (8-3 overall, 6-3 Dulles District) got on the board in the first inning when freshman Casey Forbes smacked a leadoff single and later scored on a two-out single by senior Kristina Karagiorgis.
The Falcons added two more runs in the third when senior Jillian Olson led off with a single and scored on a triple by Jones. Jones also raced home on a throwing error on the play.
Dominion scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to pull to within 3-1, but the Falcon offense erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh to cap the scoring.
Freshman Caroline Fowler and senior Alex Fierszt hit back-to-back singles to start the seventh, and Forbes was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jones followed with an RBI single to score Fierszt, and a fielding error on the play allowed Forbes to race home as well. Ball added a two-out, two-run single that plated both Olson and Jones.
Jones turned in another strong effort in the circle, allowing one unearned run while striking out eight and walking one. She retired 13 of the final 15 batters she faced en route to her eighth complete game of the season.

The Skinny: The Spartans scored four goals in the first half to run away with their district game 5-0 against the Woodgrove Wolverines. Goals were scored by Whitney Church (2), Ellie Zoepfl, Cassie Smith and Emily Kim. The Spartans are on a 21-game winning streak dating back to 2010. And in that time frame the Spartans have outscored their opponents 76-3.
Church and Zoepfl also scored on Monday in the Spartans 3-1 comeback win over up-and-coming Freedom. The duo are part of a Senior Class that has never lost in Dulles District play. Dan Sousa interviewed them after Monday's win:
Briar Woods 2, Dominion 1
The Skinny: The Falcons avenge early season loss to Dominion without team captain McCarthy and star starter Granados. Early in the first half Briar Woods midfielder Megan Benitez would find a lane and feed forward Shell Davis who danced her way past the Titan keeper for her 7th goal of the season. With a contested PK awarded to the Titans, Mo Pinkston would convert to tie the game 1-1 before the half.
Dominion started the second half with desire and the Falcon defense fought hard to protect their goalie. Cloe Barnes was solid in net stopping 8 Titan shots on the night. With 30 minutes gone in the second half, a well played throw-in down the line by freshman Carly Melkus would find the feet of fellow Falcon freshman defender turned forward Alexis Haycraft. Haycraft carried and held the ball just long enough to draw the Titan keeper and roll it past her and in for the 2-1 lead and what would be the deciding goal.

Ashburn (Apr. 25, 2011) - Broad Run High School junior Darbie Kelley has made a verbal commitment to play soccer at NCAA Division I Coastal Carolina beginning in the fall of the 2012 season. | Coastal Carolina Sisters! Spartan SR Kacey Kelley and JR Darbie Kelley will play on same team in college |
Coastal Carolina is located in Conway, S.C., just outside Myrtle Beach. Coastal Carolina tied for first place this past season in the Big South conference. Darbie Kelley helped Broad Run capture the 2010 VHSL Group AA state championship -- the school's third straight state title. She is currently a member of the highly rated FC Virginia ECNL Hotspurs coached by Paul Ellis. The Hotspurs are 7th in the Nation and in the top tier of the ECNL Challenge A division.
“Visiting the Coastal Campus and meeting Coach Paul (Hogan) and Coach Rich (Stoneman) finalized my decision,” said Darbie Kelley. "I really liked the coaching staff and their dedication to the success of the Coastal soccer program really impressed me. I enjoyed meeting many of the current freshmen class players and appreciated how nice they were to me. I'm looking forward to becoming a part of the CCU Chanticleer family."
In addition to the Kelley sisters, Coastal Carolina has also picked up an early commitment from Woodgrove junior Charlotte Ratcliff.
There are now 22 juniors already college-bound!

Softball: Friday April 15 Skinny - Vikes Open Cedar Run with Win, Panthers Make it 4 Straight Over Pats, Raiders Upset BWoods and More!
Softball - April 15
Loudoun Valley 14, Osbourn 4
The Skinny: Vikes report that they won their district opener with Sam Adams holding the Eagles to one run over five innings. Kara Kovach closed out the win. Offensively, Jamie Crisp doubled home Shelby Gibson to start the scoring in the first. Aggressive baserunning led to both Crisp and Katlyn Latka scoring.
Crisp doubled in two runs in the second and finished with four RBIs on the night. In the third, Latka tripled in two runs and in the fourth, Dani Psimass doubled in two.
Defensively for the Vikes, Cassandra LaFonte at second base turned a double play by tagging the lead runner out and then throwing to first base Psimass.
Potomac Falls 8, Park View 1
The Skinny: Panthers report that after a week's worth of rainouts, the Potomac Falls Panthers (8-2, 6-1 Dulles District) were ready to get back outside and play some ball. The Panthers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning while batting through the entire line-up and never looked back. The Panthers scored three more runs in the second inning to take a 7-1 lead, and added an insurance run in the fourth inning on its way to its fourth consecutive win with a district victory over the Patriots 8-1. The Panthers totaled 10 hits on the evening and were led by junior third baseman Lauren Fulcher (3-4) with a double, triple and three runs scored, senior pitcher Heather Kiefer (3-4) with a double and four runs batted in, and junior center fielder Carlyn Hanzel (1-4) who hit a 2-run homer, her second of the season. Kiefer allowed one unearned run in the first inning and shut down the Patriots the remainder of the game. Kiefer only allowed five Patriot batters to reach base on two hits (both by junior lead-off hitter Sam Thomas), while striking out nine and walking none.
Senior Kaitlyn McClung (1-4, run) started the game off with a lead-off slap to left field, followed by senior Erin Frasca (1-3, run) who bunted her way on, and Fulcher who reached base on an error to load the bases. Kiefer drove the first pitch to the base of the centerfield fence for a double and 2 RBIs, and sophomore Anna Zembar (1-4) singled down the third base line driving in a run. She was followed by senior Kayla Guttridge who walked to load the bases again before junior Caitie McClay grounded out driving in the final run of the inning. After the Patriots scored their only run on two errors and a passed ball, the Panthers came out swinging again in the second inning. Fulcher tripled to right and Kiefer dropped a single into right field scoring Fulcher. Zembar hit into a fielders choice before Hanzel homered to right center. The Panthers scored their final run in the fourth inning after Fulcher singled and stole second base before Kiefer hit her in for the third time with her fourth RBI of the night.
Patriots report that Heather Kiefer drove in the only two runs she’d need in the first inning as she pitched and hit her Panthers to a 8-1 victory over the Park View Patriots. For the evening, Heather drove in four with three hits and held the Patriots to an unearned run in the first. The Patriots were led by Sam Thomas who had three hits to raise her season average to nearly .600. Robin Heironimus pitched four innings for Park View and absorbed the loss. Brittney Moore pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Patriots. Panther center fielder, C Hanzel homered in the second for the Panthers.

Boys Lacrosse: Under Water Again! Loudoun County Shifts Home Games to Turf Fields at Woodgrove
Leesburg (Apr. 25, 2011) - With the rain Sunday putting the Loudoun County High School fields once again this spring "under water", the Raiders are shifting their home games tonight against Potomac Falls to the turf fields of Woodgrove High School in Purcellville.
Following the Wolverines JV boys games, the Raiders and Panthers JV will play at 7:15 p.m. with a finish time of 8:40 p.m., regardless of the time left on the clock, and the varsity contest is slated for an 8:45 faceoff which should give the teams plenty of time to beat the Purcellville light ordinance which requires the stadium lights to go dark at 11 p.m.

Baseball: Spring Break Recaps - Potomac Falls Finishes Strong at Disney, SB Nipped by OP, BR Must Delay Wood Bat Title Game, and More!
(Apr. 22, 2011) - Sure the teams are on Spring Break officially now and we may have traveled South to the beach ... but we are still giving you the The Skinny. Here is a look at the baseball action from Tuesday through Thursday:
Thurs. Apr. 21
Middleburg 16 Randolf-Macon 0
Wed. Apr. 20
Potomac Falls 7, Methacton PA 1
The Skinny: Panthers report that they finished their Disney swing on Wednesday with a 7-1 win over Methacton HS of Norristown, PA. The Panthers went 3 and 1 at Disney with their only loss being an 8th inning defeat to St. Francis.
Jackson Rogers took the mound after throwing a no-hitter on Saturday and struck out the first 6 batters. He went through 4 innings of no hit ball before giving up his only hit of the trip in the fifth. Meanwhile, the Panthers scored one in the first on singles by Tyler Rice and Rogers. They put the game away in the second with 4 runs on hits by Ryan Mahoney, Ben Sweger and Ryan Miller. Potomac Falls added single runs in the 3rd and 5th innings.
Steven Fisher and Nick Fernandez finished up on the mound. The Panthers scored a total of 23 runs while only giving up 10 runs on 16 hits.
Woodbridge 3, Stone Bridge 2
The Skinny: Steve Johnston reports for Bulldogs that three Woodbridge pitchers combined to limit the Stone Bridge Bulldogs to two runs on six hits in the consolation game of the "Let's Play Two" tournament on Wednesday afternoon. Bulldogs junior Tyler Mocabee continued his strong pitching by limiting Woodbridge to just three runs on three hits over six innings, but it wasn't enough as the Stone Bridge bats were mostly dormant until the final inning when they mounted an unlikely rally.
With two outs, catcher Colin Karafa (2-3, SB) lined his second hit of the day into left field. After a walk to Connor Donavan, Mocabee singled on an 0-2 pitch, scoring Karafa and keeping hope alive. Junior Alex Wynn, getting his first start of the season in centerfield, made things interesting by singling in Donovan. That brought the hot-hitting leadoff hitter Josh Kuzbel to the plate with the tying run on third and the winning run on first base. Kuzbel worked the count to his favor before lining a 2-0 pitch off the leg of the pitcher who recovered and threw to first to end the game.
Lefty Alex Logan pitched a scoreless seventh for the Bulldogs keeping the game within reach and giving the Bulldogs one final chance.
The loss drops the Bulldogs season record to 8-3. All three losses have been by one run. They return to action on April 25th when they host the Loudoun Valley Vikings in a non-district contest.
Middleburg 7, Mount Vernon 5
The Skinny: Dragons report that Dylan Martinez hit a 2-run HR to provide the winning margin. Daniel Goldstein notched his second win in 3 days. Middleburg finished the Let's Play Two tourney with a 2-2 record with 2 wins against AAA competition.

Cheers Sports/DST Wood Bat Tournament
Marshall 3, Heritage 2 (12)
Broad Run 3, George Mason 2
Liberty 3, Briar Woods 1
Bishop O'Connell 12, Park View 0
The Skinny: The Spartans report that the second round of the Cheers/DST Wood Bat Tournament was played at both Broad Run and Park View. The following are the results of the Spartans bracket played at Broad Run in Ashburn.
The noon game between Marshall and Heritage went 12 innings and was delayed by lightning. Marshall won 3-2 in the bottom of the 12th.
The second game between Broad Run and George Mason was decided in the bottom of the 7th. With the game tied at 2-2, Shea Bargeil doubled home Nick Richardson from second base for the winning run giving the Spartans a 3-2 win.
After two days of play Broad Run and Marshall finished the Spartans side of the bracket at 2-1 each. George Mason and Heritage finished the Spartans side of the bracket at 1-2 each. By virtue of the head to head tie break Broad Run is the #1 seed, Marshall is the #2 seed, George Mason is the #3 seed, and Heritage is the #4 seed.
On Wednesday all games will be played at Park View. The schedule is as follows:
Heritage will play Park View in the 7th place game at 9 AM. George Mason will play Briar Woods in the 5th place game at 11:30 AM. Marshall will play Liberty in the 3rd place game at 2 pm.

Potomac Falls 6, Hatsboro PA 3
The Skinny:Potomac Falls bounces back on Tuesday with a quality win over Hatsboro (PA) after losing an extra inning affair with St. Francis de Sales of Ohio on Monday.
In Monday’s game, the Panthers lost in the 8th inning to St. Francis 6-5 after playing catch up most of the game. St. Francis went through 7 different pitchers in keeping the Panthers off balance most of the game. Still Potomac Falls loaded the bases in the eighth but failed to push the tying run across the plate when they ended the game on an infield fly and fly out to center.
The Panthers took the field on Tuesday with a little different attitude.
Facing the Hatsboro Hatters (PA) Connor Gruber took the mound for the Panthers and proceeded to throw no hit ball through 4 innings while Potomac Falls built a 3 run lead. The Panthers got their first run in the 2nd on a single by Nile Roach, a walk to Matt Hoover and an RBI fielder’s choice by Matt Byrd. Ben Sweger then singled up the middle to score Byrd and the Panthers had a 2-0 lead. They added a run in the 4th on a double down the right field line by Colin Deely who scored on Hoover’s single up the middle,
Hatsboro scored 3 in the 5th on a controversial play at the plate. With 2 men on, Matt Saverio hit a ball to right field that Hoover fielded and came up throwing to the plate. Deely stepped up to catch the throw as he was bowled over by the runner. Deely was called for interference as the umpire ruled that the runner contacted Deely before he caught the ball and therefore ruled it as catcher interference. ESPN replays showed that Deely caught the ball before the runner contacted him, therefore the runner should have been ruled out. Shaken up by the play and the delay, Gruber then balked letting the tying run score. Stephen Fisher came on in relief and effectively shutdown the Hatters the rest of the way.
The Panthers responded by scoring 2 in the 5th on singles by Ryan Miller and Deely. Michael Lascomb then followed with a 2 RBI double to left field to put Potomac Falls up 5-3. They added an insurance run in the 6th on a single by Sweger who eventually scored on a passed ball.
Battlefield 11, Middleburg 5
Osbourn Park 5, Stone Bridge 4
The Skinny: Steve Johnston reports that the undefeated and state-ranked Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets hosted the Stone Bridge Bulldogs in a semi-final game of the "Let's Play Two Tournament." Coach Sam Plank's 8-1 Bulldogs traveled to Manassas looking to pull an upset, but in a back-and-forth tussle that could have gone either way, the Yellow Jackets prevailed with a score of 5-4. For the Bulldogs it was a tale of missed opportunities as they stranded nine baserunners on the night and left runners in scoring position in each of the first five innings. However, it was a missed opportunity in the sixth that shifted momentum to the home team.
A Sid Harvey steal of home in the fifth had tied the score at 4-4, setting the stage for the decisive sixth inning. Spenser Rositano led off the top of the sixth with a single to center, and proceeded to steal second and third. With one out, number three hitter J.J. White lifted a fly ball to medium right field. With arguably their fastest runner tagging at third, it seemed likely that the Bulldogs were going to take the lead. However, the Yellow Jackets right-fielder threw a strike to home plate, and the tag was applied to the sliding Rositano who was called out, ending the threat.
As so often happens when a player makes a great defensive play to end an inning, he leads off the next inning. Such was the case in the bottom of the sixth. The first batter of the inning for Osbourn Park was their rightfielder who made the catch and throw for the double play at the top of the inning. He proceeded to deposit the third pitch he saw over the centerfield fence, 365 feet away, to give the Yellow Jackets a lead they would not relinquish. In the seventh, the Yellow Jackets brought in their Ace, Scott Halsey, to get the last three outs. In what would typify the Bulldogs frustrations for the night, Josh Kuzbel hit a one out single, then proceeded to steal second base, putting himself in scoring position with one out. That's as far as he would get though, as Halsey would get the final two outs to end the game.
The Bulldog offense was led by Rositano (2-4, 2SB) and the Kuzbel brothers, Josh (3-4, 2B, SB) and Jake (2-3, 2B, BB). Steve Putnick was the losing pitcher, and his record falls to 3-1 on the season.
Stone Bridge is back in action at 12:30 on Wednesday in the consolation game vs. Woodbridge, who lost to West Springfield in the other semi-final.

The Skinny: Bulldogs report via Steve Johnston: The Stone Bridge Bulldogs baseball team won its first two games of the "Let's Play Two" Spring Break tournament on Monday afternoon, defeating the Potomac Panthers in the first game 10-0 (5 innings) and the Middelburg Academy Dragons 12-3 (5 innings). Righthander Mac West tamed the Panthers, yielding only a second inning single while striking out six. The win runs his record to 3-0 for the season. The offense was led by J.J. White (3-4, 2b, 2 RBI), Ryan Johnston (2-2, BB), Connor Donovan (1-3, 2b, 2 RBI) and West who helped himself by driving in two runs. Ty Lighton and Spenser Rositano each chipped in with one RBI each. In all, the Bulldogs pounded out 11 hits including a long double by sophomore Jake Kuzbel, his first varsity hit. Kuzbel was recently called up from the junior varsity.
In the second game, the Bulldog bats started slowly but came to life in the third. Trailing 2-0 on two unearned runs, the Bulldogs put six runs on the board to take a 6-2 lead. Junior centerfielder Brady Orrison had the big blow, plating two runs with a long double to left-center field. Johnston and Donovan also contributed run-scoring hits in the inning. The Stone Bridge offense tacked on three more runs in each of the next two innings before the game was ended due to the time limit. Orrison would finish with three RBI's while Donovan and Josh Kuzbel had three hits apiece. Sid Harvey and Johnston knocked in two runs each. On the hill, Harvey controlled the Dragon bats, allowing just three unearned runs over three innings to get the win. He was relieved by junior Tyler Mocabee who pitched the final two innings, striking out three and yielding no hits.

Coach Sam Plank's Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday at 5:30 PM in the tournament semi-finals, against the undefeated Osbourn Park Yellow Jackets .

Girls Soccer: Loudoun County Girls Soccer Avenges Only Loss on Season with 1-0 Win Over Briar Woods
By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun.com Editor
Leesburg (Apr. 16, 2011) – The Loudoun County High School girls soccer team is back on the Dulles District radar after avenging their only loss on the season Friday night with a 1-0 victory at home over Briar Woods on a blustery mid-April evening.
Raider Junior Allison Bills scored the lone goal in the 51st minute, just some 30 seconds after she had struck the right post on a breakaway. County, however, won a corner on the deflection and senior Leslie Lyford’s well struck ball found junior Alana Mackey’s head to set up the goal.
“Leslie played it in and I headed it back across and it was mixed up in the box,” said Mackey of the scramble that saw Raider junior Shauna Kain get a touch on it before Bills came in to finish. “Allison, like always, got on it and got it in.”
Briar Woods puts the pressure on, missing a penalty kick in the 60th minute and then hitting the crossbar with less than two to play and the right post with under 20 seconds to go.
“It was the longest three minutes ever,” said Bills of the frenetic finish.
The Raiders (6-1 in district and overall) finished as the AA state runner-up last year but entered the season in the shadow of district rival and 3-time defending state champion Broad Run. County then when from under the radar to almost off the radar after the Raiders fell, 5-1, at Briar Woods (4-3-1) in the season opener.
Baseball: Friday Night Skinny

Baseball
Freedom 6, Tuscarora 3
The Skinny: Eagles report that a big 2-out rally in the 6th-inning enabled them to win 6-3 at Tuscarora Friday night and improve their record to 8-4 overall (6-3 in Dulles District play), going into the break.
Freedom trailed 2-0 in the 5th when junior outfielder Matt Malacane (1-4, 2B, 2RBI, 1R) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring junior Joey Plesce (2-4, 2B, 2R) to cut the deficit to 2-1. Then, with 2-outs and nobody on in the 6th, the Eagles rallied to take the lead. First, it was Malacane again driving in the hot-hitting Plesce with an RBI double to deep left, tying it 2-2. Next, after catcher Dylan Teal (1-3, 1R) was intentionally walked, sophomore Zach Newell (3-4, 2B, 3RBI, 1R) delivered a 2RBI double to right-center to give the Eagles the lead 4-2. Newell then scored from 2nd on a throwing miscue on junior Dylan Chapman's grounder.
After Tuscarora manufactured a run in the 6th, Freedom used a single by junior Garret Schneider and another RBI hit by Newell, scoring freshman Kyle Wrighte, to close out the scoring 6-3. Sophomore DH Kevin Dean also had a big night at the plate for the Eagles, going 3-4 with 3 singles.
Freedom senior starter Brad Baker pitched 5+ strong innings, struck out 4, and allowed only 3 runs (2 earned) to get his 3rd victory of the season. Newell got the last 6 outs, striking out 3 hitters in earning the save.
Huskies report that:
The Huskies seemed on their way to victory over Freedom High School Friday night when a two out rally in the sixth inning gave the Eagles the lead and Tuscarora took the loss, 6-3.
The evening began more auspiciously for the Huskies as catcher Hunter Oke, who sparked the Tuscarora offense all night, walked and courtesy runner Ryan Wilson stole second. Left fielder Eddie Lang moved Wilson to third with a sacrifice bunt and right fielder Brady Kaplan drove him in with a single to right to put Tuscarora up 1-0.
The Huskies increased their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Oke again led off the inning with a single to right and runner Wilson stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and crossed the plate on Lang’s groundout to short. Tuscarora starting pitcher Tyler Dietrich, with the help of some sparkling defensive plays, held the tough Freedom squad scoreless through four innings, but gave up a run on two hits in the top of the fifth.
The wheels came off in the sixth, though, when with two outs the Eagles scored four runs to go ahead 5-2. The Huskies pulled within two in the bottom of the inning when Oke again walked and runner Wilson made his way around the diamond on an infield hit and an error and stole home. Freedom scored once more in the top of the seventh to increase the lead to the final score of 6-3. nbsp;
Despite the tough loss, the Huskies’ bats showed more life as several Tuscarora players in addition to Oke contributed to the attack, including centerfielder Dalton Scanlon (1 for 4 with a single); second baseman Travis Burke (2 for 3 with a sacrifice); shortstop Bernie Mayflower (1 for 3 with a single and a walk); and right fielder Kaplan (1 for 3 with a single.) Following the spring break the Huskies will look to bloom with the warmer temperature when they return to the field to face James Wood High School on 26 April.
Loudoun County 6, Briar Woods 1
The Skinny: Raiders report that they headed to Briar Woods Friday night seeking to avenge their first loss of the season. The spring winds swirled around the stadium but the senior laden outfield managed to play error free, and the Raiders took advantage of those winds, producing a 6-1 victory over the Falcons. Varsity Baseball improves to 6-5 overall and 3-5 in the Dulles District going into Spring break.
Senior Taylor Cokeley got back into form, pitching a complete game, facing only 21 batters, and limiting Briar Woods to 3 hits. He only walked one and struck out four. The lone Falcon run came in the first inning after a lead -off triple and sacrifice fly brought the runner in.
Nick Fischer and Kris Pratt both led the batting attack with 3 hits each (1 double and 2 singles each!) and reaching base all four times at bat. Tyler Saleck added a double and a single and reached base 3 out of 4 times. Matt Slack added an RBI single as did Collin Dillon.
No games for Varsity Baseball over Spring Break, and they will prepare for the 2nd half of the season. The next game will be Tuesday, April 26th, at home against Park View High School.

Stone Bridge 14, Thomas Jefferson 1 (5)
The Skinny: Bulldogs report that they hosted Thomas Jefferson Friday night in a Liberty District contest. It was the second meeting of the two teams, with the Bulldogs coming out on top in the first game with a 14-0 win. This game was again dominated by the Bulldogs, who pitched and hit their way to a 14-1 win in a five inning game shortened by the mercy rule.
Junior righthander Tyler Mocabee continued his stellar pitching by throwing three hitless innings, while striking out two and allowing no walks. Junior lefty Andrew Robertson, making his 2011 varsity debut, relieved Mocabee and pitched the fourth inning, showing good poise and control. The other junior lefthander, Alex Logan, pitched an impressive fifth inning, retiring the side on just eleven pitches.
The Bulldogs offense was held scoreless in the first inning by TJ starter Daniel Hothem, but erupted for eleven runs in the second inning. Third baseman Ryan Johnston got it started with a one out home run to left field. That opened the floodgates, and before they were finished, the Bulldogs had sent sixteen hitters to the plate and pounded out eight hits, including four for extra base hits. Senior catcher Colin Karafa smashed a two-run double to the left field fence. Senior Conor Donovan drove in Karafa with a single, and scored himself on a double by Spencer Rositano. The Bulldogs weren't finished though, and got RBI hits from Ty Lighton, Josh Kuzbel, and Sid Harvey before the inning ended. The Stone Bridge added their final three runs in the next inning on another Johnston home run to left center field, giving him two home runs and four RBI's on the night. Johnston is the first Bulldog to have multiple homeruns in one game in the history of the baseball program.
The win went to Mocabee, his second of the season. The Bulldogs record now stands at 6-1 as they prepare to play in the Let's Play Two tournament against some of the other Northern Region powerhouses during Spring Break.
