News: Touchdowns for Tommy Benefit Football Game Rescheduled Again - Moved to Oct. 14

(Sept. 30, 2010) - Due to a field conflict on its rescheduled date, Touchdowns for Tommy has been moved to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 14th. The game will still be played at Park View High School and all proceeds will benefit SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood.)

Tommy passed away to unexplained reasons at the age of 3, two years ago.

The first annual Touchdowns for Tommy was played last year at Loudoun County High School and more than $5,000 was raised in the Sterling and Leesburg communities.

This year, the game’s organizers hope to raise $10,000. (Admission for the game will be $5.) For information, contact Mike Devaney at [pvhsfootball@gmail.com].

News: True Spirit of Competition and Community - Upper Loudoun Youth Football Teams Stock Local Food Pantry

Purcellville (Sept. 30, 2010) - There is winning on the field and then there is winning off the field. The Upper Loudoun Youth Footbal League gives us a great example of a spirit of competition that benefits the community as teams in the league have raced each other to donate the most food to local food pantry, the Tree of Life.

A harsh economy left the food pantry's shelves nearly empty after the summer but the players and parents in the football league have already given almost 10,000 pounds of food -- reaching their season goal of giving in just three weeks. And they aren't stopping now.

Football: A Kick for the Record Books - Woodgrove Sophomore R.J. Warfel Makes History with His First Ever Field Goal

Purcellville (Sept. 30, 2010) - Before August Woodgrove High School sophomore R.J. Warfel had never played football before. Before Friday night the 156-pound travel soccer player had never attempted a field goal in a game situation. None of that mattered as Warfel calmly connected on a game-winning 19-yard kick in overtime to send the Wolverines to the school's first ever varsity football victory.

"I saw it going straight through and then I got tackled from every which way," said Warfel.

Playing travel soccer since the age of nine and a JV player at Loudoun Valley as a freshman, Warfel said it was a soccer coach who first told him he had "a leg for kicking" footballs.

In practice he has been able to hit from 50 yards off a metal tee, without a live holder, and with his holder, he is confident from 30 yards out.

In overtime Friday against East Rockingham, the pressure was taken off Warfel when the visitors missed their field goal attempt after the Wolverines had held them to fourth down on the first possession of overtime.

Football: Beat the LoCo Experts - Week Five Winners! A Perfect 10 as Double Digit Fans Go Undefeated

(Sept. 30, 2010) - What do Spartan Super Fan (Ashburn), Illini Karen (Ranson WV), LJGA (Potomac Falls), MachineGunKelly (Broadlands), Coach Choppy (Stephens City), Tim (East Carolina), Ed (Sterling), HSFootballFan (Lovettsville), Sam (Ashburn) and TBonz (Ashburn) all have in common?

They were perfect last week in our Beat the LoCo Experts football picks contest but we can only have one winner of the much sought after (they are actually being printed this week!) VivaLoudon t-shirts and that goes to Sam of Ashburn who not only got every pick right but guessed the exact final score of Broad Run's 42-21 win over Park View. (Below you can see Sam's picks and all the picks from last week when we had a record 70 fans play.)

Our experts also had a good week with Carl Lukat of the Loudoun Times-Mirror, Dan Sousa of VivaLoudoun and Moe Murphy of Clarke County Sports all go 7-0. Lukat (Dean of Loudoun Media) leads Sousa by one game and Murphy by two in the media standings.

Sam of Ashburn continues to hold his place on top of the fans standings and the overall leader in wins at the end of the season with get $100 from the VivaLoudoun fox! Now you can make your Week Six picks but first ...

The fine print: Only one entry per person unless you can certify a split personality ... people who speed through school zones are banned for life from the contest ... 8 out of 10 dentists claim that playing in the contest -- and flossing daily -- will help prevent tooth decay ... you are banned from making picks on illegal substances, including energy drinks but not limited to Slurpees ... no truth to the rumor that the Chilean trapped miners requested WiFi connection in order for them to play Beat the LoCo Experts ... On a day like today, you probably wish you had a turf field ... yes, you Mr. AD, I'm talking to you ...

Volleyball: Pride Mark Return of LeMaitre with Sweep Over Eagles

By Owen Gotimer
Heritage High School student journalist

Manassas (Sept. 29, 2010) - There was a lot to celebrate for the Heritage High School volleyball team this week as the Pride opened their Cedar Run District schedule Tuesday with a 3-game sweep over Osbourn Eagles and saw the return of senior Emma LeMaitre who had been out with a foot injury.

Led offensively in the 25-18, 25-8, 25-19 win by outside hitter Lian Bernett (12 kills, 1 point, 1 ace), the Pride physically dominated all three games.

Heritage took leads early on and never looked back. Bernett was assisted offensively by freshman Madeline Fowler (4 kills, 4 points) and sophomore Kelsey Hrebenach (5 kills, 3 points, 1 ace).

The Pride’s defense was terrific, led by Fowler (1 block, 10 digs), fellow freshman Sydney Busa (1 block, 8 digs), and sophomore Christina Kamis (9 digs).

Heritage totaled 7 blocks, which caused the Eagles to hit a lot more free balls to the Pride’s side of the court. Those free balls allowed the Pride to have much more clean passes which led to easier kills. Tallying 46 team digs, the Pride were sturdy not only at the net, but also on the ground.

The Pride take on their fiercest Cedar Run District opponent, Loudoun Valley, this Thursday night (September 30th), in Purcellville at 7 p.m. It is a Dig Pink fundraiser to fight breast cancer.

Note: Heritage's senior outside hitter LeMaitre, made her return to the court over the weekend (she had been out due to injury) and helped the Pride defensively Tuesday with 7 digs.

Heritage Game Stats:
Lian Bernett – 12 kills, 2 blocks, 1 point, 1 ace, 4 digs
Sydney Busa – 1 kill, 1 block, 7 points, 8 digs
Madeline Fowler – 4 kills, 1 block, 4 points, 10 digs
Kelsey Hrebenach – 5 kills, 2 blocks, 3 points, 1 ace, 1 dig
Christina Kamis – 2 kills, 5 points, 1 ace, 9 digs
Emma Le Maitre – 7 digs
Dariel Montanez – 3 digs
Lesley Reed – 1 kill, 6 points, 1 ace
Rachel Runyan – 4 digs
Stephanie Yokoyama – 1 block, 5 points, 2 aces, 6 digs, 25 assists

South Riding (Sept. 25, 2010) - The Briar Woods High School football team was dominant for a fourth straight year in the annual Bird Bowl against Freedom Friday night. The Falcons turned in another stout defensive effort and produced their highest-scoring output of the season Friday night to win easily 35-3.

Briar Woods owns a 5-1 advantage in the series between the Loudoun schools that opened in 2006. The Falcons have won each of the last four meetings by 30-plus points.

"This senior class has never lost to them," Briar Woods coach Charlie Pierce said. "That was important."

The Falcons totaled 339 yards of offense while holding the Eagles to 41 total yards in the penalty-filled game. Briar Woods (1-0 in the Dulles District, 3-2 overall) was whistled for 21 penalties for 210 yards. Freedom (0-1, 2-2) was penalized 12 times for 91 yards.

Football: Broad Run(s) to 33rd Straight Victory with 42-21 Win Over Park View

By Dan Sousa
VivaLoudoun Editor

Sterling (Sept. 25, 2010) - Broad Run High School showed Park View Friday night that the Spartans could score the easy way or the hard way.

In the first half Broad Run opened with a spirit-sapping 16-play, all-run 71-yard scoring drive that chewed up more than seven minutes and in the second half the Spartans opened by scoring twice on three snaps. Either way they got to the end zone the final result was a 42-21 win for Broad Run to open Dulles District play and extend the school's winning streak to 33 games.

"Offense, defense, special teams ... you put a smile on my face," first-year Broad Run coach Matt Griffis told his team after the dominating win on the road.

The game wasn't as close as the final score indicates as Broad Run (1-0, 5-0) led 42-7 in the contest before emptying their bench and Park View (0-1, 1-3) was held to just nine total yards rushing on 20 plays.

"You have to bounce back. Keep your heads up," Park View first-year coach Ferris Eways implored his players.

Both teams face tough tests on the road next Friday with Broad Run at Ashburn neighbor Briar Woods (1-0, 3-2) and Park View going to Leesburg to take on Loudoun County (0-0, 2-2).

Volleyball Notebook: Woodgrove Wins First Match in School History; Tuscarora Wins First Ever District Contest in 5-Game Thriller; Broad Run Edges Freedom and More!

(Sept. 24, 2010) - It was a wild week of volleyball in Loudoun with so many great story lines. Woodgrove High School, for starters, defeated Millbrook in five on Wednesday for the school's first ever victory.

The Wolverines almost achieved that feat the night before but it was Tuscarora taking a first as the Huskies won their first ever Dulles District match in a 5-game thriller between the county's two newest high schools.

Broad Run, which fell to Loudoun County on Tuesday, put an end to Freedom's winning streak on Thursday and claimed sole possession of the second spot in the Dulles District in a -- naturally -- five-game thriller.

Heritage, on the same day they got some ink from the WashPost, fell to Fairfax but the Pride bounced back against Oakton on Thursday. Loudoun Valley meanwhile survived two 5-game (thrillers!) to come away with wins over Langley and Robinson.

And Stone Bridge ... just keeps winning.

Volleyball: Heritage Bounces Back with Win Against Oakton

By Owen Gotimer
Heritage High School student journalist

Leesburg (Sept. 24, 2010) - Heritage High School, which suffered its first loss of the season on Tuesday against Fairfax, bounced back Thursday with a win in four games over Oakton, 25-23, 25-7, 25-27, 25-22.

Following a tough loss Tuesday night in five, the Pride (4-1 overall) came out strong Thursday in a non-district match against Oakton High School.

Game one was close with the biggest lead of the game 14-10 Heritage and the Pride came out on top, 25-23.

Momentum was won early again in game two as the Pride took a commanding 6-0 lead to start off. Oakton simply couldn't handle the hard-hitting Pride which included Lian Bernett (16 Kills, 2 blocks, 11 digs, 11 points - 1 ace), Sydney Busa (5 kills, 2 blocks, 11 digs, 10 points - 2 aces), Madeline Fowler (7 kills, 1 block, 14 digs, 2 points), Kelsey Hrebenach (10 kills, 1 block, 3 digs, 10 points - 4 aces) and Christina Kamis (7 kills, 8 digs, 4 points).

It was the best game Heritage has played all season as they cruised to 25-7 win.

Oakton suffered another 5-point deficit early in the third game, but the Cougars didn't give up. Late in the game Heritage had match point at 24-22, and looked to wrap up a 3-game sweep. The Cougars, however, finally answered Heritage's defense, with three consecutive tip shots. Oakton won game three 27-25.

Heritage's coach Carmel Kielty rallied her team together before going into game four. She told the girls to get this next game done and to play like they did in game two. The Pride took her advice and lead for all but four points in the fourth and final game, ending the match with a 25-22 win.

Stephanie Yokoyama finished with 38 assists for Heritage and had two kills, 15 digs and scored 13 points on service including five aces. Also defensively for the Pride were Dariel Montanez (7 digs) and Rachel Runyan (10 digs).

Heritage has two more non-district games this Saturday as they travel to Robinson to face the host Rams and Langley, before they take on Osbourn in their first Cedar Run District contest next week.

Kamis, one of Heritage's starting outside hitters, believed that the win against Oakton helped identify holes in the team and also recognized what they have to work on before the Osbourn game.

Both Kamis and fellow starter Kelsey Hrebenach agreed that Heritage's biggest district competition is going to be local rival and defending AAA state champion Loudoun Valley.

While defeating the reigning state champs is going to be tough for the Pride, Hrebenach and Kamis established that they have a shot at bringing home the first AAA district championship in Heritage sports history.

The Pride's Cedar Run District bid starts next Tuesday, Sept. 28th at 7 p.m., as Heritage takes on Osbourn at home.

Cross Country Notebook: Area Teams Ready for Oatlands Invitational Saturday

(Sept. 24, 2010) - The good news for area cross country runners is that they don't have to go far for one of the largest meets, not only in Virginia, but on the East Coast as the 6th Annual Oatlands Invitational Saturday outside of Leesburg will feature 90 high schools and almost 4,000 athletes.

Freedom and Tuscarora are the hosts for the massive 5K meet run on the grounds on of historic Oatlands Plantation. The course is mostly grass, with rolling hills, some wooded trails, and two creek crossings (assuming there has been enough rain of late!).

Parking is $5 per car. Directions can be found here.

The record-breaking high of 95 degrees will cool a bit to 86 degrees on race day but conditions will still be hot for the normal race conditions.

Loudoun County senior Tommy Curtin was a Top 10 finisher on the boys varsity A race last year and should challenge for a podium place Saturday.

Football: Beat the LoCo Experts - Week Four Winners!

(Sept. 23, 2010) - We had the biggest week ever in the history of the Beat the LoCo Experts with more than 50 entries last week and four fans were perfect.

With Chipper of Sterling, mr226 of Charles Town, Pitt37r of Ashburn and Wayne of South Riding all 8-0 we had to go to the video tape ... er, tiebreaker that is and Pitt37r is the winner (winner, chicken dinner) of a brand new VivaLoudoun t-shirt (disclaimer: when they are printed but guess what ... we were actually designing them this week!).

Below you can see all the fans that played and their picks. Also, check out how (poorly!) our Experts did with Jason "Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog" Rufner going 7-1 to win the week. Carl "The Dean" Lukat of the LTM remains on top of the Experts standings (See below).

We will have the fans season to date totals up and running as soon as the VivaLoudoun Fox gets a spare part for his Super Computer (the flux capacitor is out again).

Go ahead and give us your best shot this week. Just fill out the online form here ... one entry per person please! Winner of the week gets a t-shirt (between now and 2020) and the best record for the entire season gets $100 (real money!).

Fine Print: Sarah L. has asked us to bring back the fine print and wants to know how she can get her husband to help with the dishes ... employees of VivaLoudoun are not eligible to play, if there were any ... those that put dansousa4president as their nickname clearly don't know about my devastating defeat for senior class president in 1980 ... reality TV stars are forbidden from playing ... we still like LLoudoun Llamas as a baseball team name ... We reserve the right to pay out the $100 prize money in Chuck E. Cheese tokens

Purcellville (Sept. 23, 2010) – Loudoun Valley seniors Tanner Welsh and Scott Davidson finished 1-2 at the Cedar Run District golf tournament Wednesday at the Loudoun Golf and Country Club but Battlefield edged the Vikes for the team title.

The Bobcats, led by sisters Karishma and Khushboo Thiagaraj, shot a 297 to win the title by seven strokes over Valley which came in at 304. Battlefield had five players shoot 77 or lower on the par-72 course.

“The last three or four years, it is always close when we play Battlefield,” said Loudoun Valley coach Gary McKay whose Vikings won both Cedar Run min-tournaments to take the regular-season title.

Both Battlefield and Loudoun Valley advance to the Northwest Region tournament which will be held Oct. 4 at The Gauntlet in Fredericksburg. Also qualifying were five players from Heritage which shot 323 in the 4-team tournament.

Volleyball: Loudoun County Alone at the Top in Dulles District Standings After Storming Back Against the Spartans

Raider Juniors Katrina Kirby and Jenna Strange on the Big County Win

By Dan Sousa

(Sept. 22, 2010) – The Loudoun County High School volleyball team dropped the first game Tuesday night to Broad Run in a Dulles District showdown, but the Raiders, buoyed by the vocal backing of their student fans and the crisp cadence of the school’s drumline, stormed back to dominant the next three games.

The 22-25, 25-8, 25-12, 25-15 convincing victory leaves Loudoun County (6-0 in district, 8-1 overall) alone in first place as Broad Run slips to 4-1 and 4-2.

“Broad Run are big rivals. We love playing them, they are a great team,” said Loudoun County junior Jenna Strange, who had a good all-around evening with eight kills, 19 digs, 14 points, and three aces.

Last year the two teams split four intense matches with Loudoun County winning a one-game playoff to take the district’s top seed and Broad Run beating the Raiders on their home court in the district tournament finals. That pedigree accounted for the late-season atmosphere Tuesday.

“We tried to get a lot of friends to come out and help support us and the drumline was helpful in getting us pumped up,” said Strange.

The Raider drumline plays and the Raider Riot tries to keep the beat!

Loudoun County coach Jenica Matthias, who semi-joked that her team had been preparing for weeks for the match, had her girls ready for the hyper-charged setting.

“We have been practicing for a loud atmosphere for the girls to have to communicate with …whether it’s loud music, loud fans, the drumline … just the excitement of the match,” said Mathias who has led the Raiders to three consecutive AA state titles. “I think that helped tonight because they weren’t afraid and they didn’t back down.”

Golf: Par for the Course as Loudoun County, Brantley Kushner Defend Their Dulles District Titles

All About the Hardware: Loudoun County captures Dulles District regular
season and tournament golf titles for the second straight year.

Ashburn (Sept. 21, 2010) – There were no surprises at the awards podium Tuesday for the AA Dulles District golf tournament at the 1757 Club as Loudoun County captured its third straight title and Raider senior Brantley Kushner defended his individual title.

For the second straight year, however, there was a bit of a surprise in the runner-up spot as Freedom – after a 4-4 district dual campaign and fifth and third place district mini tournament finishes – claimed second to qualify for the Region II tournament which the Eagles happen to host in two weeks at the South Riding Club.

The top story, however, was all about Loudoun County for the third straight year and like last year, when the Raiders won by 18 strokes, it wasn’t close this year as County scored 311 on the tough course to finish 17 ahead of Freedom at 328.

“It’s getting to be a habit, but a good habit,” said Loudoun County coach John Laycock.

Golf Notebook: Cedar Run, Dulles and Liberty Hold District Tournaments This Week

(Sept. 21, 2010) - The prep golf regular season has already wrapped up and all 12 Loudoun high school will play in their respective district tournament this week starting today with the 9-team Dulles District tournament at the 1757 Club.

Loudoun County, unbeaten in duals and district min-tournaments, has already clinched a regional bid and is the overwhelming favorite today. The real drama will be which individuals qualify for regionals (the top six not on the Raiders and next highest scoring team will qualify) and which team will join the Raiders in the Region II tournament which will be played this year at South Riding.

On the individual side, defending champion Brantley Kushner of Loudoun County has been battling a shoulder injury and will need to hold off some strong challenges from his own team to retain the title.

The action continues Wednesday with the Cedar Run District tournament at Loudoun Valley Golf and Country Club, hosted by regular-season champion Loudoun Valley. Heritage will compete in this 4-team tournament. And Stone Bridge starts in the two-day Liberty District tournament at Herndon Centennial.
