Boys Basketball: Two Stone Bridge Players Transfer to Middleburg Academy including Liberty District Player of the Year Nik Brown
(July 24, 2010) - Liberty District Player of the Year Nik Brown, a first team all-Northern Region pick and one of the top scorers in the Washington DC metro area with a 22.2 points per game average last season, has officially transferred, along with teammate Jimmy Paige, from Stone Bridge High School to Middleburg Academy.
Brown, a rising senior, and Paige, a promising rising sophomore, become the first two high-profile transfers to Middleburg Academy -- formerly known as Notre Dame Academy -- since former Herndon High School coach Gary Hall took over the boys basketball program in April.
"I felt like at Stone Bridge I did all I could do .. the move is nothing against Stone Bridge or coach (Sonny) Green," said Brown on Friday as he was in Las Vegas preparing for a showcase basketball tournament.
Brown, a 6-foot-3 guard, said Middleburg's strength of schedule was a big factor in his decision.

Boys Basketball: Potomac Falls Nearly Perfect in Summer Play
(July 21, 2010) - Expectations are surely high for a Potomac Falls High School boys basketball team that returns all starters from last year's team that captured the VHSL Division 4 state title and the Panthers have lived up to the hype in summer play.
Potomac Falls finished a perfect 11-0 campaign in the Jim McKay Summer League at Flint Hill with 72-55 win over AAA Chantilly in the finals. Potomac Falls coach Jeff Hawes was only able to watch one game during the summer league season but said it was his team's depth that help them go unbeaten with Jeff Biber -- father of former Panther standout Ben Biber -- coaching the team. And there was more former Panther help in the semifinals and finals as another ex-PFalls player, Darien Almond, stepped in for Biber to lead the team.
The Panthers were almost unbeaten at camp at the Paul Webb All-Star Basketball Camp at Randolph-Macon, going 10-1. After beating South County on a buzzer beater by -- who else! -- Lukas Mihailovich, the Panthers then fell to South County, and its starting front line of 6-foot-6 and taller, in the finals.
Speaking of 6-foot-6, Potomac Falls rising junior Greg Graves continues to impress. Graves, who really had his coming out party at the state finals, attended an elite camp at James Madison recently and Hawes said Graves did very well. If Graves ends up an inch or two taller, expect him to be at the top of some NCAA Division I recruiting lists.
Rising senior Mihailovich -- the top player in the state for AA last season -- has also been getting plenty of interest with schools such as Wofford, St. Francis (PA), Colgate, Harvard and Princeton all keeping the talented guard on their radars.

VivaLoudoun's 2009-10 High School Sports Year in Review - Part 1: Fall
(July 14, 2010) - It was quite a first year of high school sports coverage for VivaLoudoun.com so we thought we would give you a three-part review of last year's highlights in Loudoun.
Following a year when Loudoun County Public School athletes and their teams brought home a then-record five Virginia High School League (VHSL) state titles, it would seem that the 2009-10 school year had a lot to live up to and the local athletes not only met the high expectations but exceeded them with an amazing eight state titles strung out across five sports and seven schools.
The state titles captured in 2009-10 fell into several categories from the rare three-peat title run to the difficult back-to-back title defense to several historic firsts. All of them were testimony to the level of skill and teamwork displayed on the Loudoun playing fields.
In the area of three-peats both the Loudoun County girls volleyball team and Broad Run girls soccer squad won a third consecutive state title.
In both sports, Loudoun ruled the postseason. In volleyball, on the same afternoon at Virginia Commonwealth University that the Raiders won the AA state title, Loudoun Valley captured the AAA state title. In soccer, four of the final eight teams left in the AA and AAA state tournaments were from Loudoun with Stone Bridge winning the AAA state title, Loudoun County finishing runner-up in the AA finale to Broad Run and Loudoun Valley losing in penalty kicks in the AAA state semifinals.
Some teams in 2009-10 were able to turn their historic first state titles from the previous years into back-to-back state titles as Broad Run football, which won its first state title in 2008 after 40 years of competition, made it two straight in December by winning the Division 4 crown again. Stone Bridge just missed its second Division 5 title as the Bulldogs fell to Phoebus in the finals.
In girls basketball, Freedom, which had become the first Loudoun school, along with the Loudoun County girls, to ever win a state basketball crown in 2009, repeated in 2010 as the Eagles moved up in classification to capture the Division 4 state title a year after winning the Division 3 championship.
Then there were the historic first state titles as Potomac Falls became the first boys basketball team to ever win a state title with a heart-stopping double overtime victory in the Division 4 finals at VCU in Richmond. Another historic state title was won by the Briar Woods competitive cheer team as the Falcons brought home the first ever state title in the school’s 5-year history by winning the AA crown.
And there were some near misses as Stone Bridge just missed adding a AAA state competitive cheer title and Potomac Falls baseball fell in the AA state finals as did the Loudoun Valley boys lacrosse team in the VHSL open tournament finals.
In swimming, Broad Run High School junior Mark Sarman captured both the 200 IM and 100 fly titles at the VHSL A/AA state meet and helped the Spartan 200 free relay team to a state title as well. On the girls side, Briar Woods won not one but two relays as the Falcons swam away with the individual medley and 400 free titles.
Individually, Stone Bridge junior Hayley Springman won the AAA state discus title and the Park View High School boys 4x100 relay was crowned AA state champion as the quartet of Nathan Santana, Daryus Beale, Takim Gayle and Dennis April turned in a winning 42.48 time.
Finally, to show how far Loudoun athletics has come, several former Loudoun athletes were in the news as Ed Wang (Stone Bridge/Virginia Tech) and Adrian Tracy (Potomac Falls/William and Mary) were chosen in the NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants and Conor Mullee (Broad Run/Saint Peter’s) was selected in the Major League Baseball draft by the New York Yankees. Loudoun was even represented at the Winter Olympics as former Harmony Intermediate student Ashley Caldwell made the U.S. Freestyle Ski team at age 16.

Kushner was the 2010 Dulles District champion. Raider Athletic Director Ken Wright said that Miami was "Brantley's first choice all along and he was thrilled to make the (verbal) commitment to them ... Well done Brantley!"
Burns, a towering 6-foot-7 defensive lineman who helped the Bulldogs make it to the Division 5 state title game last year, had double digit offers before narrowing it down to Boston College and Virginia. Read more about Burns in this Loudoun Times-Mirror article that includes a video interview.

On the Sidelines with Dan Sousa - Heat Wave Photo Special! Summer Camps of the Week! What Else We Have Cooking!
(July 3, 2010) - Heat Wave! And of course that means cool savings on our photos. In our first year covering sports in Loudoun we have uploaded 30,863 photos and between now and July 7 take 25 percent off your entire order. Our way of saying thank you and keep your cool as it nears 100 degrees.
We haven't posted any articles in a week -- partly because editor Dan Sousa somehow managed to spend three days in New York City, one day in Myrtle Beach (I did not get evicted from my lodging, ahem) and then two days at Clemson all in a crazy 8-day period -- but we have been working, here are some things to look out for:
Summer Camps: Do you have a summer camp we should cover. We hit Freedom High School's youth wrestling camp earlier this week and will post a photo gallery and video interview with Eagle wrestling coach Kent Nagy. Give us a ring if you want us to check out your fun summer camp!
VivaLoudoun Team of 2009: Lest we forget ... you voted for the Briar Woods High School competitive cheer team as they brought home the school's first ever state title. Look for a cool photo shoot to celebrate that big win!
VivaLoudoun Team of Spring 2010: Wow ... almost 3,000 votes and the Broad Run girls added this coveted title (we joke!) to their three straight state titles. Stone Bridge can take solace in being named No. 1 in the nation (more on that in a post later!). We will do something special for the BR girls win in this "townhall vote".
News: Youth track and field ... more college signings ... you bet ... check back over the 3-day weekend as we clear our inbox!
Next Year: We have enjoyed our first year of coverage with VivaLoudoun and hope you have as well. In just 11 months we have some eye-popping numbers with 1,268,579 page views from 209,885 visits. We have had 67,186 unique visitors to our site and we hope that local advertisers take advantage of our loyal following. Cheers Sports gets a big thank you for being our first advertiser and in the next week look for APEX Gymnastics to join us as a sponsor. Remember as a fan of the site you can help support us as well by photo purchases and also by hitting the "Donate" button on the right side of the page.
Honestly, 1.2 million page views is less than a year on a new site is amazing and since we have done very little advertising we have to thank you for the positive word of mouth!
So ... so get the grill fired up this 3-day weekend and when you seek the AC from the heat wave, log on and check out the latest on VivaLoudoun!
